Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a display which has a visual field angle in two directions by providing >=2 display patterns in an upper and a lower substrates, and making their orientation directions different according to visual field angles in the two directions. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal oriented film is formed on display patterns 1a and 1b provided on the upper and lower substrates 2 and 3. The display pattern of the upper substrate 2 is rubbed by a mask method as shown by arrows I and K and the display pattern of the lower substrate 3 is rubbed as shown by arrows I and K to orient liquid crystal. Then, TN liquid crystal is charged between the two substrates 2 and 3 to manufacture a liquid crystal panel 1. Polarizing plates 4 and 4' are arranged on and under the liquid-crystal panel 1 so that polarization directions L and M coincide with the orientation directions of the substrates 2 and 3 respectively. pbtaining the liquid crystal display device. The visual field angle of the display pattern 1a is in a direction A and that of the display pattern 1b is in a direction B, but the orientation is performed in direction H' and J' to obtain visual field angles in directions C and D.

Conventionally, in TN type liquid crystal display panels, the liquid crystal is aligned in the same direction for all display patterns on the same substrate, so viewing angle dependence is strong, and display from different viewing angles is difficult. Due to problems such as low contrast and poor display quality, the viewer's viewing angle was limited to a single direction.

Next, the display pattern of the substrate 2 above this alignment film is arrow H,
The display pattern of the T direction and the lower board 3 is arrow I,
Liquid crystal alignment is performed by rubbing in the K direction. At this time, since the alignment directions are different from each other in the direction of arrow H, 1 or the direction of arrows I and K, anisotropic alignment processing can be performed by rubbing through a mask having windows only in the desired alignment region.

By the way, according to the liquid crystal alignment direction of this embodiment, the viewer's viewing angle is as shown in FIG. '
, 1' direction, viewing angles of the display patterns 1a and 1b can be obtained in the C direction and the D direction, respectively. In addition, as shown in FIG. 3, polarizing plates 4, 4 are arranged above and below the panel to align the liquid crystal in the M, N, and O directions.
If ' is also placed in the same direction as the liquid crystal alignment direction of the upper and lower substrates 2 and 3, display with viewing angles in the E direction and F direction can be obtained, respectively. Similarly, when the liquid crystal is aligned in the L', M, N', and O directions, a panel having viewing angles in the G and P directions can be obtained.

In short, when manufacturing a panel with viewing angles in two different directions using the same liquid crystal display panel, the display pattern corresponding to each viewing angle is first created by placing the alignment film in different directions on at least one of the same substrates. Then, the facing substrate side is aligned in the same manner.
Moreover, by performing orientation treatment at an angle that intersects the orientation direction on one of the substrates, and further bonding polarizing plates with polarization in the same direction as the orientation direction of the upper and lower substrates on the top and bottom of the panel, two types of A liquid crystal display device having a viewing angle in the direction of is obtained.
