Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a display which has a visual field angle in >=3 directions by providing >=3 display patterns to an upper and a lower substrate, making orientation directions of the display patterns on at least one substrate difference according to >=3 visual field angles, and arrangin a polarizing plate which provides polarization in the same directin as the orientation direction. CONSTITUTION:An oriented film is formed on display patters 1a-1c on the two upper and lower substrates 2 and 3. The display patterns on the upper substrate 2 are rubbed by a mask method as shown by arrows H. J, and L the display patterns on the lowr substrate 3 are also rubbed as shonwn by arrows I, K, and M to orient liquid crystal. Then, TN liquid crystal is charged between the substrates 2 and 3 to form a liquid crystal panel 1. Polarizing plates 4 and 4' are arranged on and under the panel 1 by boring a window in only an unnecessary display pattern so that polarization directions O-Q and O'-Q' coincide with orientation directions H, J, and L, and I, K, and M of the display pattersn 1a-1c. Thus, such a display that the pattern 1a has a visula field angle in a direction A, the pattern 1b has a visual field angle in a direction B, and the pattern 1c has a visual field angle in a direction C is obtained.

Conventionally, in TN type liquid crystal display panels, the liquid crystal is aligned in the same direction for all display patterns on the same substrate, so viewing angle dependence is strong, and display from different viewing angles is difficult. Due to problems such as low contrast and poor display quality, the viewer's viewing angle was limited to a single direction.

On the other hand, the directions of the three viewing angles of the liquid crystal display panel are not limited to those in this embodiment, and the directions of the three viewing angles are based on the orientation direction of each display pattern and the polarization direction of the polarizing plate corresponding to the orientation direction of each display pattern. Three viewing directions relative to the panel can be created in any direction as long as they are in the same direction. Further, by setting the liquid crystal orientation direction of each display pattern to the orientation treatment direction of the display pattern on at least one substrate, a display with different viewing angles within the same substrate can be obtained.

Furthermore, the viewing angle directions on the same substrate are not limited to three types as shown in this embodiment, but there are four or more display patterns on the same plane, and the display patterns on at least one substrate are different from each other. The direction of the orientation treatment is made different depending on the viewing angle in four or more directions, and furthermore, polarizing plates having polarization in the same direction as the orientation direction of the display patterns are produced and arranged on the upper and lower substrates by the press punching method. In this way, a liquid crystal display device having viewing angles in four or more directions can be obtained on the same substrate according to the present invention.
