Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable a display without a polarized plate and with high contrast and bright, independent of visual angle, by making the thickness of a liquid crystal layer lower than the specific value and specifying the angle theta of the oriented direction at the upper and lower substrate boundaries, in a guest-host effect type liquid crystal display. CONSTITUTION:In twisted orientation of a nematic liquid crystal constituent having positive anisotropic dielectric constant including two color element or two color nematic liquid crystal constituent 28 at no electric field, the angle theta of the direction of orientation between the upper and lower substrates and electrodes 27, 27, is taken as pi/4<=¦theta¦<=pi/2. The thickness (d) of the constituent 28 is taken as 3mu or less and P is made small in the relation of the spiral pitch P=2pidtheta. Thus, at no electric field, the incident light 30 is elliptic polarization 31, 32 of left and right spiral, the both components 31, 32 are subject to the absorption by e.g., color element molecules 33, 34, and strong light emission is obtained without polarized plate. At the application of electric field, the liquid crystal constituent 28 is orthogonal to the substrate and transparent. Thus, the display with double contrast in comparison with conventional one and bright and ease of observation is obtained.
