A dichromatic dye 13 displaying a black color, and a nematic liquid crystal 12 having negative dichromaticity and positive dielectric anisotropy displaying a red color are interposed between these. While a switch 11 is off, the dye 13 and the long axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules align in the direction of homogeneous arrangement, and the polarization direction of a linearly polarizing plate 6 is positioned in parallel to the homogeneous arrangement direction, then white light transmits through the plate 6 and the transmitted light 14 transmitted through the dye 13 and the liquid crystal 12 displays a black color.
