Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal display device of which one of the flickering part or background display a black color and the other displays the other color by suitably selecting dichromatic dyes displaying a black color, dichromatic dyes displaying a color other than the black and nematic liquid crystals having positive or nematic dielectric anisotropy. CONSTITUTION:The surfaces of display electrodes 9, 9' on the inside surfaces of transparent substrates 7, 7' and the transparent electrodes 7, 7 are coated with transparent insulation thin films 8, 8', and an orientation treatment for arranging molecules homogeneously is applied to these. A dichromatic dye 13 displaying a black color, and a nematic liquid crystal 12 having negative dichromaticity and positive dielectric anisotropy displaying a red color are interposed between these. While a switch 11 is off, the dye 13 and the long axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules align in the direction of homogeneous arrangement, and the polarization direction of a linearly polarizing plate 6 is positioned in parallel to the homogeneous arrangement direction, then white light transmits through the plate 6 and the transmitted light 14 transmitted through the dye 13 and the liquid crystal 12 displays a black color. When the switch 11 is turned on, the parts of the electrodes 9, 9' display a red color.
