Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable a color display of different display colors and background colors to be obtained by laminating a colorless twisted nematic liquid crystal panel and a guest-host liquid crystal panel mixed with dyes.
CONSTITUTION: Transparent glass substrates 2, 3, 4 are fixed by spacers 5, 5. Display pattern electrodes 1, 1 are formed on the inside surface of the substrate 4. A common electrode 6 is formed on the substrate 3 of the surface opposing to the electrodes 1 and electrodes 7, 8 are formed on the respective opposite surfaces of the substrate 2 and substrate 3 over their entire surface. The electrodes 1, 6, 7, 8 are all transparent electrodes of In2O3, etc. and orientation films 9, 9 such as SiO film are formed on these. A nematic liquid crystal 10 having positive dielectric anisotropy is put in between the substrates 2, 3 and is formed of twisted structure rotated by 90° between the orientation films 9, 9. A liquid crystal layer 11 consisting in adding a dichromatic dye in a positive dielectric nematic liquid crystal is provided between the substrates 3, 4. These liquid crystal molecules are also provided with the twisted structure rotated 90°. A colorless polarizing plate 12 is provided on the display side of this laminated device and a colored polarizing plate 13 on the opposite side. A light source 16 is provided behind the polarizing plate.
