Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the size of a cell and to improve the quality thereof by using a glass sheet for one transparent substrate and a plastic sheet having a small double refractive index for the other transparent substrate, providing transparent electrodes and oriented films to the respective substrates, and sandwiching a ferroelectric liquid crystal between the substrates with the oriented films positioned on the inside. CONSTITUTION:Two sheets of the transparent electrode substrate formed by providing the transparent electrodes and the oriented films on the transparent substrates are superposed on each other with the oriented films positioned on the inside and the ferroelectric liquid crystal is injected therebetween. The glass sheet is used for the one transparent substrate and the plastic sheet having the small double refractive index of <=300 nanometer (nm) or more preferably <=200nm is used for the other substrate to prevent the generation of coloration by the double refraction. The effect of a ferroelectric liquid crystal is remarkable as the liquid crystal material. More specifically, the liquid crystal having a chiral smetic C phase, H phase, I phase, J phase, K phase, G phase or F phase is used. The large-sized and high-quality cell for liquid crystal display which has <=4mu inter-substrate spacing and less distortions is thereby obtd.
