Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform positive displaying free from irregularities by subjecting one of substrates to vertical orientation treatment and the other substrate to tilt orientation treatment in guest-host (GH) displaying using a dichromatic dye of transition moment parallel to the long axis of molecules and a negative nematic (Nn) liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:An Nn liquid crystal 3 added with a suitable amt. of a dichromatic dye 4 of transition moment parallel to the long axis of molecules is used for the liquid crystal. A substrate 1 is subjected to vertical orientation treatment and a substrate 2 to tilt orientation treatment wherein the liquid crystal tilts at about 15 deg. to normal. When there is no electric field, the molecules arrange like (a) and are transparent as shown by (c). When applied with an electric field, the tilt angle of the substrate 2 is regulated and therefore, in the part of an electrode 5, the orientation direction aligns like (b), and assumes the colored state shown by (d), the tilt orientation treatment is accomplished by applying the vertical orientation treatment on the diagonally vapor deposited film of SiO.
