Abstract

PURPOSE:To make tilting angles easily controllable and make rise sharp with low voltage by subjecting the upper and lower substrates of a liquid crystal display element sealed with a twisted nematic type liquid crystal to an orientation treatment in such a way that they have respectively specific pretilting angles. CONSTITUTION:One of the substrates of a twisted nematic type liquid crystal display device is rubbed at the org. or inorg. transverse orientation interface to have about 2 deg.-3 deg. pretilting angles, and the substrate to be opposed to this is subjected to plane vapor deposition after diagonal vapor deposition to have about 10 deg. pretilting angle. The cell is disposed in the configuration wherein both orientation directions are rotated 90 deg.. Thereby, the tilting angle at the center of the cell while no voltage is applied is made close to the average of the pretilting angle of both substrates, and the rise of the liquid crystal when voltage is applied is made acute, thus lower voltage is required and the good time division display is obtained.
