Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal element of simple production and a low cost by subjecting both surfaces of the 3rd substrate which has electrodes on both surfaces and is inserted between the 1st and 2nd substrates to vertical orientation treatment. CONSTITUTION:The 1st, 2nd transparent substrates 1, 2 having transparent electrodes 1', 2' on one surface and a transparent substrate 3 applied with transparent electrodes 3', 3'' on both surfaces are opposed and are fixed by means of sealants 9. A liquid crystal composition 8 consisting of a dichromatic dye and a nematic liquid crystal of negative dielectric anisotropy is injected between the substrates 1 and 3 as well as 2 and 3. Tilt oriented layers 4, 5 are provided on the surfaces of the substrates 1, 2 in contact with the liquid crystals, and vertically oriented layers 6, 7 are provided on both surfaces of the substrate 3. The vertical orientation treatment is accomplished by vapor depositing SiO at about 80 deg. angle to the normal of the substrates, and immersing the substrates in an aq. soln. of, for example, N- dodecyl-N-dimethyl-gamma-aminopropyl trimethoxy silane then drying the same by heating. Thereby, the production is made easily and the cost is reduced.
