Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a field effect type liquid crystal display element having the improved temperature dependence and response time, by applying >=1 more horizontal orientation treatments on upper and lower electrode substate surfaces and accordingly, increasing the orienting direction of the crystal to be enclosed as well as reducing the viewing angle dependence. CONSTITUTION:An orientation treatment is applied on surfaces 60 and 61 of two substrates holding a twist nematic liquid crystal by rubbing of the prescribed directions 62 and 65 with use of an orienting agent of an organic silane compound. Then the orientation treatments are carried out as shown by arrows 63 and 64 as well as 66 and 67 at a 5 deg. angle with the directions 62 and 65 as centers. The substrates 60 and 61 cross each other with the angle between the directions 62 and 65 set at 80 deg. to be turned into upper and lower electrode surfaces, and a polarizing plate is added to the outside. Thus a liquid crystal display element is obtained. With such liquid crystal display element B having the electrodes received the horizontal orientation treatment of 3 directions, the viewing angle dependence is improved as compared with a conventional element A. And the element B can be used at a low temperature with a short response time.
