Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable black and white display with an excellent time sharing characteristic by disposing a double refracting member which provides a double refracting effect to one face by utilizing the double refracting effect of a liquid crystal cell formed with the twisted spiral structure within the range of specific angles. CONSTITUTION:A pair of upper and lower electrode substrates 11 and 12 which are subjected to an orientation treatment are disposed to face each other apart at a spacing d1, then the electrode substrates 11, 12 are adhered. A nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy is sealed into the spacing therebetween. The liquid crystal molecules are arranged to the spiral structure in which the twist angle theta is twisted 200-300 deg. in the thickness direction between the electrode substrates. The double refracting member 40 having the double refracting effect is disposed on the upper side of the substrate 11 of the liquid crystal cell 60 constituted in such a manner. Upper and lower polarizing plates 15, 16 are provided on both sides of the member 40 and the cell 60 in-between. The member 40 acts to modulate the polarization state of the light transmitted through the cell 60, thereby converting the display which is heretofore made only in colors with the cell 60 alone to the black and white display. The color display is, therefore, possible as well.
