Abstract

PURPOSE:To simultaneously display patterns having contrast differences by providing plural layers of liquid crystal layers in forming a twisted nematic type liquid crystal display device and dividedly setting the angles of torsion of the liquid crystal molecules as the entire part of the device in each liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:Substrates 12, 14, 17 respectively having transparent conductive electrodes 13, 15 and 16, 18 are disposed between a polarizer 8 and analyzer 9 which are disposed with the axes of polarization being perpendicularly intersected. A liquid crystal layer 10 is held between the substrates 13 and 14 and a liquid crystal layer 11 between the substrates 14 and 17. Further the faces of the respective substrates in contact with the liquid crystal are orientation-treated in parallel to the axis of polarization of the polarizer 12 with the substrate 13, in parallel with the axis of polarization of the analyzer 9 with the substrate 17 and in the direction at the intermediate of both of the abovementioned directions with the substrate 14 respectively, whereby the angles of torsion of the liquid crystal molecules are dividedly set so that the sum of the angle of torsion theta10 of the liquid crystal layer 10 and the angle of torsion theta11 of the liquid crystal layer 11 becomes 90 deg.. Hence, when a voltage is applied between the electrodes 13 and 15 as well as 16 and 18, the patterns are displayed with strong contrast and when a voltage is applied only between the elec trode 16 and 18 (or between 13 and 15), they are displayed with weak contrast.
