Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the visibility and to prevent the display contents from being recognized erroneously by placing a pair of polarization films on both faces of a liquid crystal cell, setting an angle of torsion of a liquid crystal layer to 50 deg.-85 deg., and also, placing polarization axes of a pair of polarization films so as to make a cross angle of 91-100 deg.. CONSTITUTION:A nematic liquid crystal layer 6 is inserted and held between substrates 1 (1A, 1B) provided with electrodes 2 (2A, 2B), and on both faces of a liquid crystal cell provided with a light shielding film 4 on other part than the part corresponding to a display pattern, a pair of polarization films 7 (7A, 7B) are placed so that a light beam transmits through a polarization axis of a polarization film in a part where no voltage is applied. In this state, a voltage is applied to an electrode of other display pattern part than a desired display pattern. Subsequently, polarization axes of said pair of polarization films 7 are placed so as to make a cross angle of 91-100 deg. without allowing them to be orthogonal to each other, and a contrast ratio in the diagonal direction is raised. Also, the control direction of an oriented film is allowed to cross at a prescribed angle by the upper and the lower substrates 1 so that a liquid crystal molecule forms a torsion structure of 50 deg.-85 deg., and selected in accordance with an installation angle of a display device.
