PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal display device which can light only the parts formed with the electrodes in prescribed patterns brightly by setting the angle assumed by the polarization axis direction of a linear polarization plate and the molecular axis direction of liquid crystals at a specific angle. CONSTITUTION:Transparent conductive films 2a, 2b are provided respectively on the opposite two main surfaces of two sheets of parallel glass substrates 1a, 1b and orientation control films 3a, 3b are formed. The film 2a, 2b have prescribed pattern shapes, and are the electrodes for applying electric fields for the liquid crystal 4 sandwiched between these. Also, the films 3a, 3b are provided in order to orient the liquid crystal 4 in a constant direction. A linear polarization plate 5 and a reflection plate 6 are provided respectively on the other main surfaces of the substrates 1a and 1b, and the angle of the polarization axis direction of this linear polarization plate and the molecular axis direction of the liquid crystal 4 is set roughly at 45 deg..
