Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable multi-color display with a supertwisted nematic type display element by providing the color filter corresponding to electrode patterns. CONSTITUTION:An upper substrate 11 on which a transparent electrode and an oriented film 15 are formed and a lower substrate 21 on which transparent electrodes 23 and an oriented film 25 are formed are disposed apart from and opposite to each other and a liquid crystal 31 is sealed therebetween, by which a liquid crystal cell 11 is constituted. An upper polarizing plate 41 and a lower polarizing plate 43 are disposed to sandwich this cell 10. Uniaxially stretched plastic films are used as the substrates 11, 21. The angle between the stretch axis of the respective substrates 11, 12 and the transmission or absorption axis of the polarizing plates 41, 42 in proximate to the substrates 11, 12 is confined within + or -3 deg.. The angle between the orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules and the transmission or absorption axis of the polarizer is set at 30-60 deg.. The liquid crystal molecules are approximately horizontally oriented with the substrate plane and have the twisted structure of 160-360 deg. between the two substrates 11, 12. The product d.DELTAn of the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn of the liquid crystal at ordinary temp. and the thickness (d) of the liquid crystal layer is so determined as to satisfy the equation. The color filter 52 corresponding to the transparent electrode is disposed to this cell.
