Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable multi-color display with a supertwisted nematic type display element by constituting a polarizer of a combination of >=2 kinds of colorless polarizing plates and color polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION:An upper substrate 11 on which a transparent electrode 13 and an oriented film 15 are formed and a lower substrate 21 on which transparent electrodes 23 and an oriented film 25 are formed are disposed apart from and opposite to each other and a liquid crystal 31 is sealed therebetween, by which a liquid crystal cell 11 is constituted. An upper polarizing plate 41 and a lower polarizing plate 43 are disposed to sandwich this cell 10. The liquid crystal molecules are approximately horizontally oriented with the substrate plane and have the twisted structure of 160-360 deg. between the two substrates 11, 21. The angle between the orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules in contact with the substrates 11, 21 and the axis of transmission or absorption of the polarizing plates 41, 42 in proximity to the substrate 11, 21 is set at 30-60 deg.. The product of the thickness (d) of the liquid crystal at ordinary temp. and the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn of the liquid crystal is specified in the range expressed by the equation. The polarizer 41 is constituted of the colorless polarizing plate 41-a and the color polarizing plate 41-b.
