Abstract

PURPOSE:To avoid the undersired display caused by a transparent spacer for a twist nematic (TN) type liquid crystal cell containing the transparent spacer within the display part, by forming a stripe pattern to the polarizing plate at one side and then distributing said spacer at a specified position. CONSTITUTION:For instance, the liquid crystal layer 50 is enclosed between the glass substrate 11 containing the digit display electrode 30 and the glass substrate 21 containing the theta-shaped segment electrode 31. Then the polarizing plates 60 and 70 having the polarizing surfaces orthogonal to each other are provided at both sides of the layer 50. Thus a figure display TN-type liquid crystal cell is formed. In such cell, as the polarizing plate 60 of one side, the one that has a polarized layer 62 of a stripe pattern on a transparent support plate 61 (63: polarized layer lacking part) is used. Then the transparent insulating spacer 41 is provided at the position (i) where the electrodes 30 and 31 are not superposed and at the position (ii) corresponding to lacking part 36 of said polarized layer.
