Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the display characteristic so that excellent contrast is obtained, by recessing the surface of a substrate corresponding to a part on which a metallic electrode is formed. CONSTITUTION:Recessed grooves are formed in a form of stripe of a constant pitch on the surface of parts of a pair of glass substrates 8 consisting of a liquid crystal cell, by performing etching treatment with hydrofluoric acid. On the parts of the glass substrate, metallic electrodes are formed. Then, transparent electrodes 9- 11 and metallic electrodes 12-14 are formed on the grooves. These substrates are opposed to each other in such a way that transparent electrodes 9-11 of these substrates cross at right angle, and a nematic liquid crystal consisting of substance which has frequency dependence for dielectric anisotropy and whose dielectric anisotropy is positive in low frequency areas and negative in high frequency areas, is enclosed in the space between both substrates. Therefore, no breakage will occur at the time of rubbing treatment, and the resistance value can be maintained at a low level by thickening the thickness of the metallic electrode even when the width of the metallic electrode is narrowed.
