Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a liquid crystal display cell which is easy to see in practicable use by applying wall bearing determination (orientation treatment) to the inside surfaces of substrates in such a manner that the direction of high observation frequencies and the direction where the display contrast of the element is good nearly coincide.
CONSTITUTION: In a liquid crystal display device formed by disposing glass substrates 5, 5' having transparent electrodes 4, 4' in such a manner that the arrow directions of wall bearing determination directions (directions where the substrates are rubbed by absorbent cotten) 7, 7' become counter parallel, sandwiching a quest-host type liquid crystal composition 3 comprising an Np liquid crystal 1 and a dichromatic dye 2 therebetween, and disposing a light diffusing plate 8 on the light incident side and a polarizer 9 on the light exit side, the wall bearing determination is done on the substrates in such a manner that the direction where observation frequencies are high is included in the space on the side where the long axes of the liquid crystal molecules face orthogonal to said wall bearing determination direction, with the plane perpendicular to the substrate surfaces as a boundary.
