Abstract

PURPOSE:To make uniform controlling of the spacing in a cell of a large display area possible by differing the central diameter of spacers to be inserted in a peripheral sealing material and the central diameter of spacers to be put in the spacing. CONSTITUTION:In a liquid crystal display element obtained by holding a pair of substrates 1, 2 having formed electrodes at a prescribed spacing with a peripheral sealing material 5 by opposing electrode surfaces and sealing a liquid crystal in the spacing therebetween, spacers 4 and 3 are provided on the sealing material 5 and the liquid crystal. The central diameters of said spacers are differed so that the central diameter of the spacers 4 in the material 5 is larger by about 0.3-2mu than the central diameter of the spacers 3 in the liquid crystal. Thereby, an approximately uniform spacing is obtained with the large-sized substrates of >=5cm<2> display areas.
