Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the display quality of a negative display by a twisted nematic mode by adding a positive dichromatic dye into a liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:An upper substrate 1 and a lower substrate 2 are sandwiched by a spacer 3 and the nematic liquid crystal 4 which is dissolved with the positive dichromatic dye 13 and has positive dielectric anisotropy is sealed therebetween. The dichromatic dye molecules are oriented similarly to the liquid crystal by previously twisting the nematic liquid crystal by 90 deg. between the upper and lower substrates 1 and 2 by a method such as rubbing. The axis of polarization of a lower polarizing plate 5 is made to coincide with the orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules in contact with the lower substrate and further the axis of polarization of an upper polarizing plate 6 is made to coincide with the axis of polarization of the lower polarizing plate, by which the negative display is realized. Light leakage and color tone change are thus prevented and the display having the good display quality is obtd.
