Abstract

PURPOSE:To orient a liq. crystal uniformly vertically to a surface of each substrate by rubbing a polyimide film formed on the substrate and treating the rubbed film surface with a silane surfactant. CONSTITUTION:A soln. of polyamic acid is coated onto a glass substrate 1 having a transparent electrode film 2 and condensed by heat treatment at about 200-350 deg.C to form a polyimide film 3 having about 0.01-1mum thickness. The film 3 is rubbed with abrasive cloth in a fixed direction, immersed in an about 0.01-1% soln. of a silane surfactant such as N,N-dimethyl-N-octadecyl-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilyl chloride in an alcoholic org. solvent, and dried at about 100 deg.C for about 1hr in an inert gas to form a silane surfactant film 4. A nematic liq. crystal 5 with negative dielectric anisotropy and a P type dichromatic dye 6 are held between the substrates 1, 1' constructed as mentioned above. When no electric field is applied, the crystal 5 and the dye 6 orient vertically to surfaces of the substrates at a small tilt angle alpha0.
