Abstract

In a twisted nematic liquid-crystal display cell, a specific inclination of the nematic director is necessary on the inner surface at least of one of the glass plates (1, 2) forming the cell, in order to evade problems of inverse inclination. A five-degree oblique vapour deposition of SiO delivers an excessively large inclination and slows the response time of the cell. The angle of inclination is reduced by coating the five-degree oblique vapour deposition with the aid of a surface treating agent which produces a homogeneous orientation. <IMAGE>
