Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable formation of a single domain of a ferroelectric liquid crystal and to obtain uniform response characteristic by forming one of orientation films of a liquid crystal element having a liquid crystal layer interposed between a pair of substrate having a liquid crystal orientation film on a transparent electrode, with a Langmuir-Blodgett's film, and another orientation film with a polymer film. CONSTITUTION:After forming a transparent electrode (Nesa pattern) 2 on a glass substrate 1, SiO 3 is vapor-deposited to the electrode 2. Thereafter, a polymer film 4 and a Langmuir-Blodgett's film 5 are formed separately on the SiO layer. A liquid crystal cell is constructed using a sealing material 6, and an injecting port for ferroelectric liquid crystals 7 is sealed. By this process, a single domain is formed permitting exhibition of uniform storage characteristic and control of liquid crystal molecules in the major axis direction. Thus, uniform contrast and uniform response characteristic are obtd. and a large picture plane display element is realized.
