Abstract

PURPOSE: To unify orientation treatment and provide sufficient display functions by subjecting the substrate surfaces forming liquid crystal cells to horizontal orientation treatment by corona discharging.
CONSTITUTION: The electrode forming surface in contact with liquid crystals of the insulation characteristic substrates in which liquid crystals are held and which are provided with transparent electrode layers of zinc oxide, idium oxide, etc. and the insulation substrates provided with the electrode layers of gold, aluminum, etc. are subjected respectively to high-frequency corona discharge treatment. Thence, the surface of all the insulation substrates undergo required uniform horizontal orientation treatment. If nematic liquid crystals are injected between the insulation substrates opposed with these corona treated surfaces, the displaying of good quality and good contrast is accomplished by the uniform horizontal orientation treatment even with the substrates of large target surfaces, thus the sufficient display function is provided.
