Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform positive display by nonlighted segments by providing display electrodes and a peripheral electrode by way of an insulation layer on one of the electrode substrates of a liquid crystal cells, and selectively applying voltage to the peripheral electrode and the nondisplay segments. CONSTITUTION:The surface of the display electrodes consisting of the segment electrodes and lead electrodes provided on an upper substrate are covered with an insulation layer, and a peripheral electrode 13 is provided thereon over the entire surface excluding the segment parts. A counter electrode 14 is provided to a lower substrate, and voltage is applied between the nondisplay segments and the counter electrode 14 and between the peripheral electrode 13 and the counter electrode 14, whereby positive display is accomplished while the display elements are kept in a nonlighted state. Since this simply necessitates the adaption of the horizontal orientation treatment which has been technically established by using nematic liquid crystals having positive dielectric anisotropy and dyes having positive dichromaticity, the positive display of high reliability free from coloring in the lead wire parts is obtained with the substantially negative display liquid crystal cell.
