Abstract

PURPOSE: To lower the driving voltage for a liquid crystal composition, by adding 4- cyanoterphenyl to the liquid crystal composition.
CONSTITUTION: A transparent electrode 2 of SnO2 etc. is formed on a transparent substrate 1 of glass etc. and on the transparent electrode 2 are formed an organic film of polyimide etc. which is subjected to rubbing treatment and an inorganic film as an orientation film 3 with slantingly deposited SiO2. A liquid crystal display element thus obtained is operated. The addition of said 4-cyanoterphenyl enables driving voltage for the liquid crystal composition to be lowered by approx. 0.1V and also its phase transition point to be raised by approx. 1W2°C.
