Abstract
PURPOSE:To eliminate the heterogeneous display of segment regions and background regions at the off and to improve display quality level by providing an entire surface electrode, an insulation characteristic thin film and segment electrodes or a common electrode on a substrate successively from the substrate toward a liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:In a titled device sandwiching the liquid crystal composition contg. a cholesteric liquid crystal or a nematic liquid crystal of positive dielectric anisotropy and an optically active material and having the relation expressed by d/P>=1.5 referring to a gap (d) between a spiral pitch P and substrates 4, 9 faced to each other, between said substrates 4, 9 having electrodes 5, 8 for the purpose of application of electric fields and utilizing cholesteric-nematic phase transfer phenomena, a lower entire surface electrode 8 provided over the entire surface of the substrate 9, an insulation characteristic thin film 7 and segment electrodes 6 are installed on the substrate 9 successively from the substrate 9 toward the liquid crystal layer. Thereby, a high display quality level is obtained in the d/P>=1.5 region as well.
