Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the uncoloring in the background part by providing a polarizing plate with its light transmission axis direction aligned to a display viewing direction, and inclining the direction of liquid crystal molecules to the viewing side in a titled device laminated with plural layers of guest-host type liquid crystal display layers. CONSTITUTION:In a titled device laminated with plural layers of guest-host type liquid crystal display layers interposed with nematic liquid crystals 3 of negative dielectric anisotropy contg. multichromatic dyes 4a between a pair of electrode substrates 1a, 2a, a polarizing plate 5 is provided by aligning its light transmission axis direction N to a display viewing direction E. Further, the direction of the liquid crystal molecules 3 of the layer (b) at least nearest the plate 5 is inclined to the display viewing side, and the directions of the liquid crystal molecules 3 on the mutually adjacent sides of the layers (a), (b) are inclined respectively to the same direction. Then, the light going toward the display viewing direction E is not absorbed by the dye molecules 4a, 4b; hence as far as the device is viewed from the direction E, there is no coloring in the background part, and the display is visible with good contrast.
