Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase transmittance and speed by providing two layers of guest- host liquid crystal and subjecting these two layers to 2-frequency driving. CONSTITUTION:This light valve has the two layers sandwiching the guest-host type liquid crystal 1 and these two layers are so oriented as to intersect respectively orthogonally with the intra-surface direction. These two layers are driven by the 2-frequency driving method. Light does not transmit through the liquid crystal layers 1 as shown in the figure (a) when a high-frequency voltage is not impressed to the liquid crystal layers 1. The liquid crystal molecules are oriented perpendicularly to a substrate 4 and the light transmits through the liquid crystal layers when a low-frequency electric field is impressed thereto. The light valve is, therefore, extremely bright without requiring polarizing plates. The 2-frequency driving method is used and, therefore, the response speed is extremely high although this light valve is a nematic liquid crystal. The high-speed liquid crystal light valve having the high transmittance is thereby obtd.
