Abstract

1462978 Controlling light RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 16 April 1975 [17 April 1974] 16709/74 Heading G2F When a "twisted" layer of nematic liquid crystal material with positive dielectric anisotropy is subjected to an electric field across its thickness so that it changes from an optically active state to a uniaxial state with its optic axis substantially perpendicular to the plane of the layer, the resulting field of view of the layer as disposed between polarisers is restricted due to alteration of the polarisation of off-axis rays, as in conoscopic interference figures. The field of view is broadened by disposing a uniaxial crystal plate parallel to the liquid crystal layer, the two uniaxial optic axes being parallel and the signs of their optical anisotropics being different. The presence of the crystal plate reduces the field of view of the unenergized layer, and preferably the plate is chosen such that the fields are substantially equal in the presence and absence of an electric field across the nematic layer.
