Abstract
1477478 Controlling light DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 11 Dec 1974 [30 Nov 1973] 55744/73 Heading G2F A display device comprises, in order, a linear polarizer, a nematic "twist" cell with shaped electrodes for producing rotation of the plane of incident polarized light by 35-55 degrees, and preferably 45 degrees, a quarter wave plate and a reflector of the type which retains a substantial amount of the incident polarization. The preferred axis of the polarizer is parallel or perpendicular to the nematic alignment at the nearer side of the cell and is parallel perpendicular or at 45 degrees to the principal, fast or slow, axis of the quarter wave plate. The reflector may be a mirror or a coating of aluminium paint. As shown the electrodes are of the seven segment, figure of eight, type for alphanumeric display. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1390925.
