Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain thin type liquid crystal display device with high optical efficiency capable of displaying pure colors, not mixed colors, by adding dichromatic dyestuff to TN (twisted nematic) structure liquid crystal to provide GH (guest- host) effect.
CONSTITUTION: While the liquid crystal is free of electric field, white polarized lights W1, W2 intersecting with each other at right angles will pass through a blue polarizing plate 4, and the light W1 becomes a blue polarized light B1. Then the lights W2 and B1 enter the liquid crystal 14 to which dichromatic dyestuff 15 is added. Since the direction of orientation of the liquid crystal is designed to coincide with the direction of light transmission of polarizing plate 4, the light W2 becomes a red light R2. The lights B1 and R2 are rotated by 90 degrees by the TN structure to enter a black polarizing plate 6, and the light R2 is reflected 7 and absorbed 34 in the liquid crystal layer to be a fresh red color R2'. When an electric field is applied, the liquid crystal is changed into vertical orientation, so that the light W1 is turned into a blue light B1 by means of plates 4, 6, and is reflected 7 and absorbed 34 to be a fresh blue color. Thus, depending on the state of electric field, either color of dichromatic dyestuff 15 or color polarizing plate 4 may be displayed.
