Abstract

The twisted-nematic liquid-crystal electrooptic passive-display cell comprises two transparent plates (1 and 2) carrying drive electrodes (5 and 6) between which the liquid crystal (3) is held captive. This cell furthermore includes two polarisers (7 and 8) located in front of and behind the said plates, respectively. Dichroic molecules are mixed with the liquid crystal (3) so as to determine the colour of the background of the display. In particular, by using a selective polariser at the front and a neutral polariser at the rear of the cell, the display appears as one colour on a background of another colour. <IMAGE>
