Abstract

Relates to enhancing colour contrast in liquid crystal displays with addressed character or background electrodes. A liquid crystal arrangement capable of providing light with a variable degree or direction of linear polarisation (twist cell 53 and polariser 51; or dye in a twist cell, or in a cell for homotropic to parallel realignment or vice versa); backed by an optically anisotropic plastics plate 55 containing scattering centres and fluorescent dye (a microporous sheet containing a fluorescent dye gust-liquid crystal host mixture aligned with the long pore axis; a plastics matrix containing birefringent needles and isotropic or anisotropic fluorescent dye - (or the needles are dyed - and stretched). Fluorescent light produced in and scattered by plate 55 is preferentially associated with the on or off state of the cell 53. Final polariser 57 and reflector 59 may be replaced by a coloured diffuse or specular reflector or a black absorber. Polarisers 51 and 57 may be neutral or coloured. <IMAGE>
