Abstract

The invention relates to providing good contrast in displays in which one or more display characters of a liquid crystal cell are depicted in colour against a background by electrical addressing of character or background. In this invention the cell 1 in use selectively exhibits optical scattering over either character or background areas, light incident on a dye is partly converted to fluorescent light, and the latter is scattered from the scattering areas of the cell. A colour selective reflector 19 is spaced 21 from the rear 7 of the cell. The fluorescent dye may be dissolved in the liquid crystal layer 3 of the cell, or incorporated in a plate 33 of plastics material bonded to the front 5 of the cell. The cell may exhibit a phase change or cholesteric bistability effect using a mixture of 10% cholesteryl nonanoate (CN) +90% 4,4'-n-pentyl cyanobiphenyl, dynamic scattering (p- methoxybenzylidene-p'-butylaniline MBBA), or a cholesteric texture change effect (MBBA + CN). <IMAGE>
