Abstract

This invention relates to a color polarizing film composed of a uniaxially oriented polyvinyl alcohol film which is dyed with a dye having a dichroic ratio. Conventional color polarizing films have a dichroic ratio which is substantially independent of the wave length of incident light. According to this invention a dye is used which causes the dichroic ratio of the visible absorption spectrum of the film to increase in proportion to an increase in wave length of incident light at that region of the wave length which is longer than the maximum absorption wave length, preferably by at least 25 nm. The dyes used in carrying out the invention are azo dyes. A typical dye has the following constitutional formula:- <IMAGE> In Figure 1 is shown a liquid crystal display device incorporating a color polarizing film embodying the invention. In Figure 1 polarizing films 11 and 19 are supported in respective glass substrates 12 and 18. 13 and 17 are transparent electrodes and 14 and 24 are nematic liquid crystals. At least one of the films 11 and 19 is treated with a dye having a dichroic ratio as described above. <IMAGE>
