Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible with a simple method to increase contrast with a liquid crystal color display device using a guest-host effect, by adding a fluorecent material having little optical anisotropy in addition to the liquid crystal containing a dichroism coloring matter.
CONSTITUTION: More than 0.1wt% of a fluorecent material having a relatively small optical anisotropy, such as thiazole derivarive shown by equation I, oxazole derivative shown by equation II (in these equations, R and R' are H, alkyl, allyl, aralkyl, alkoxy and phenyl), etc., is mixed to a positive dielectric anisotropic nematic liquid crystal, in which about 0.1wt% of a dichroism coloring matter is mixed. The liquid crystal is used for a display cell. The above mentioned fluorecent materials emit a fluorecent light having peculiar wave lengths, because they have no optical anisotropy, unlike conventional guest-host type liquid crystal color display, in which colorless display is made because the dichroism coloring matter becomes homeotropic orientation together with the liquid crystal due to an electric field impression and the dichroism matter does not absorb any light. Contrast in display using this device, therefore, can be improved by combining the dichroism coloring matter and the fluorecent material appropriately.
