Abstract

PURPOSE: A liquid crystal composition capable of giving stable guest-host effect-type liquid crystal display elements, comprising a nematic liquid crystal composition containing a dichromatic dye and an antioxidant to inhibit the chain reaction of the dye.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A nematic liquid crystal composition containing a dechromatic dye (a) having a great anisotropy of the visible light absorption spectrum or a chiral nematic liquid crystal composition containing the dye and an optically active substance is incorporated with (B) an antioxidant capable of combining with radicals formed by, the photodegradation of the dye and inhibiting the chain reaction. Amine compounds of formula I, phenolic compounds of formula II, and a phosphate the formula (C16H27O)P, may be cited as the antioxidant. Dyes of formulas III and IV may be cited as (a).
