Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a display device for a positive type guest-host liquid crystal, useful as a wristwatch, a table top calculator, etc., having stability, low voltage, and sufficient responsitibility, by using a phenylcyclohexyl carbonate type liquid crystal blended with a specific novel compound.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal composition consisting of (A) of a phenyl-cyclohexyl carbonate shown by the formulaI(R1 and R2 are 1W6C straight-chain alkyl) and (B) a novel compound shown by the formula II(R3 and R4 are straight- chain alkyl or alkoxy) are used in a display device for a guest-host liquid crystal wherein the nematic liquid crystal 4 with negative dielectric anisotropy dissolving the dichroic dye stuff 3 is put between the two or more base plates 1 and 2 subjected to vertical orientation treatment. If necessary, the composition is preferably blended with an optical active substance or cholesteric liquid crystal.
