Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a low-viscosity nematic liqud crystal compsn. having negative anisotropy of dielectric constant, containing a 4-n-alkoxyphenyl-4'-alkylcyclohexane and a 4-n-alkoxy-2,3-dicyanophenyl 4'-alkylcyclohexylcarboxylate.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal compsn. contains, as main components, a 4-n- alkoxyphenyl-4'-alkylcyclohexane (A) of formula I wherein n, m are each 1W8, and a 4-n-alkoxy-2,3-dicyanophenyl 4'-alkylcyclohexylcarboxylate (B) of formula II wherein n, m are each 1W6. When a liquid crystal compsn. having a wider liquid crystal temperature range is required or a high-speed response at a low temperature is required, a 4-n-alkoxy-2,3-dicyanophenyl 4'-(4"-n-alkylcyclohexyl)phenylcarboxylate (C) of formula III (wherein n, m are each 1W6) is used together with the above compsn. contg. components A and B.
