Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal having a pitch of a spiral structure free of temperature dependence, by a combination of a specific benzoate having a levorotatory power with an optically active substance having a dextrorotatory power with a temperature gradient of an opposite sign of a nearly equal absolute value.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal composition is obtained by a combination of alpha-2-octyl 4-(4-hexyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoate having a levorotatory power and an optically active substance having a clockwise rotatory power with a temperature gradient of an opposite sign of a nearly equal absolute value [e.g., 4-cyano-4'-(2-methylbutyl)-biphenyl, 4-(2-methylbutyl)phenyl 4'-(2-methybutyl)-4- biphenylcarboxylate, or 2-methylbutyl 4-(4-hexyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoate]in such a way as to induce its spiral structure. The concentration ratio of said substances used is 0.75W0.83.
