Abstract

PURPOSE: A liquid crystal composition having improved temperature characteristics, comprising a cholesteric liquid crystal of a dextrorotatory helical structure, a cholesteric liquid crystal of a levorotatory helical structure and a polygenetic pigment.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal composition comprising a cholesteric liquid crystal of a dextrorotatory helical structure, a cholesteric liquid crystal of a levorotatory helical structure and a polygenetic pigment whose absorption for visible light depends upon the orientation of the molecule. In the application to the field of display, as the cholesteric liquid crystal is suitable a system with a large-pitch helical structure, prepared by adding a cholesteric liquid crystal or an optically active substance having an asymmetrical carbon atom in the molecule to a nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy. Examples of the optically active substance include a compond represented by formula I, wherein 2-MB is a group of formula III and a compound represented by formula II, wherein 3-MP is a group of formula IV. Examples of the polygenetic pigment which is used as an L type bichromic pigment include compounds of formulas V and VI.
