Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a wide visual field angle and high contrast by containing nematic liquid crystal whose dielectric anisotropy is positive, photo active material and dichromatic dyes in the liquid crystal layer so that the pitch of its chloesteric state is 1/3 to 1.
CONSTITUTION: Material such as 4-(2 methyl butyl)-4' cyano biphenyl is added as photo active material to the nematic liquid crystal whose dielectric anisotropy is positive to make it a cholesteric liquid crystal and further dichromatic dyes are added and mixed at 1.0wt% to the liquid crystal, in the guest-host type liquid crystal display device. This mixture is sealed in the cell having transparent electrodes. At this time, the pitch of the cholesteric state is made 1/3 to 1 the gap of the transparent electrodes. In this way, the display of good contrast which causes phase transition under low voltage is obtained.
