Abstract

A nematic liquid crystal composition comprises at least one compound A of the general formula: <IMAGE> mixed with at least one compound B of the general formula: <IMAGE> and/or with at least one compound C of the general formula: <IMAGE> where R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl groups and may be the same or different and R4 is a cyano group, an alkyl group or an alkoxy group. Other components, e.g. <IMAGE> modified compounds B and C where R2 and R3 are alkoxy, or a pleochroic dye "guest" material may be present. The preparation of compounds A-C and modified compounds B and C is described.
