Abstract

The invention relates to a liquid crystal display device employing a nematic liquid crystal material 22 containing a dichroic dye 24. In the cell, two alignment layers are applied to at least one of the cell substrates 10,16. One layer 48,50 covers the area of the substrates outside the display pattern, and serves to maintain the liquid crystal molecules adjacent to that area in the state whereby very little incident light is absorbed by passage through the cell. The other layer 14,20 is applied to a display pattern area substantially defined by cell electrodes 12,18, and serves to maintain the liquid crystal molecules between the cell electrodes in a state whereby a high proportion of the incident light is absorbed by passage through the cell, in the absence of a voltage being applied to the cell electrodes. <IMAGE>
