Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve a liquid crystal display element having further higher contrast and color contrast, by using two polarized plates in which the spectral transmissivity is different from each other. CONSTITUTION:Two substrates 2, 2' are opposed via a spacer 3, and a liquid crystal 4 is filled in the air gap. On the surface of the substrates 2, 2' in contact with the liquid crystal, electrodes 5, 5' are provided and a voltage is applied between both the electrodes. This liquid crystal element 1 is located between polarized plates 6, 6'. The average spectral transmissivity T of the polarized plates 6, 6' is 30-65% and the difference between the transmissivity T1 is >=25%. Thus, by using two polarized plates 6, 6' with different spectral transmissivity, very excellent liquid crystal elements with high contrast of dark/ light and color can be achieved.
