Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide the title element obtd. by charging a soln. of a viologen derivative in carbonic acid ester solvent between transparent and opposite electrodes on transparent substrates. The life of the element is elongated and the contrast ratio is enhanced as compared to an element using conventional solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An electrically coloring display cell is constituted by placing glass substrate 1a provided with tin oxide film display electrode 2a formed along a display pattern and glass substrate 1b provided with tin oxide film opposite electrode 2b face to face with spacers 3 in-between. 0.1 mol of N,N'-diheptyl-4,4'-bipyridinium dibromide is dissolved in 20 ml of a carbonic acid ester such as ethylene carbonate, and 50 wt% of titanium oxide is added to the resulting viologen derivative soln. to prepare a chromic soln. DC voltage is applied between the electrodes of an electrically coloring display element constituted by charging the soln. into the cell to allow the cathode surface to assume a brilliant blue color. The life of the element is elongated and the display contrast is enhanced as compared to an element using conventional solvent such as water or acetonitrile.
