Abstract
PURPOSE: To eliminate the defect of increasing tendency to degradation in contrast with lapse of cycles and increase response speed by providing a diaplay electrode and specific two counter electrodes and connecting coloring, erasing and reproducing power sources between these.
CONSTITUTION: A voltage is applied from a writing power source 16 between the display electrode 4 composed of a transparent conductive film 2 and a WO3 layer 3 on a transparent substrate 1 and the first counter electrode 10 on the substrate 9 opposing thereto by way of a spacer 6 in such a manner that the display electrde becomes negative. The H+ in electrolyte 7 migrates from the WO3 layer 13 on the conductive film 12 of the electrode 10 to the electrode 4 side and the electrode 4 colors to blue. Next, a voltage is applied from an erasing power source 17 between the second counter electrode 11 composed of a conductive film 14 and graphite layer 15 and the electrode 4 in such a manner that the electrode 4 side becomes positive. The H+ on the electrode 4 side migrates to the electode 11 side of a lower H overvoltage, then the color disappears. Further a positive voltage is appied from a reproducing power source 18 to the electrode 11 and a negative voltage to the electrode 10. The H+ migrates from the electrode 11 to the electrode 10 and the H+ concentration is kept approximately the same as before the writing.
