Abstract
PURPOSE: To make responsiveness high by alternately applying the voltages of predetermined 2 values to a light bulb element comprising a cholesteric-nematic phase transition type liquid crystal.
CONSTITUTION: Transparent electrodes 11', 12' are coated on the transparent substrates 11, 12 of a liquid crystal light bulb element 1, and a liquid crystal layer 13, an inductive body mirror 14, a light shielding film 15 and a CdS photoconductor layer 16 are provided therebetween. The liquid crystal 13 comprises a cholesteric- nematic phase transition type liquid crystal. From a driving means 3, AC voltages V1 and V2 are applied at intervals of about 20ms to the transparent electodes 11', 12'. When the information from a write-in means 2 such as CRT display is inputted to the light bulb element 1, the resistance of the photoconductor layer 16 decreases in the light irradiated portions and voltage drops becomes small as well. If V1 is set high and V2 low at suitable voltages with respect to the phase transition threshold value V0 by taking the resistance of this layer 16 into consideration, the light bulb element 1 becomes transparent in the light irradiated portions and becomes opaque in the non-irradiated portions, thus the write-in of high responsiveness may be accomplished.
